I'm a creative writer (personal essays, poetry, creative nonfiction, experimental prose) and small business owner (I run a school of creative writing in San Francisco called The Writing Salon). For me, all creativity is spiritual, whatever the medium. I want to see and experience the world in as many ways as I can. My journey from verbal to visual has been wonderful. Photography is one more adventure, one more way to explore the joy of living.
I have a masters degree in poetry, and I like to think that, in my best shots, I manage to create a moment of visual poetry - a glimpse into the soul of whatever I'm aiming the camera at, whether that be an abstract close-up of an intricately layered decaying wall. . . or the sinuous curve of a tree trunk. . . or... simply a color — a burst of plum, a shimmer of green, a subtle shade of white. As for my technical proclivities when it comes to the art of photography, well, I don't own a SLR camera; my pictures are all taken with an old point-and-shoot digital Olympus. Someday I'd like to get fancier equipment, but for now I rely almost solely on "my third eye." I try to make up for my lack of equipment and technical know-how with good compositions, and . . . by waiting patiently for the right light and moment.
